Driving

This normally takes us about 9-10 hours from Calais. We usually get a very early morning ferry and are in France by 5pm the same evening. The roads are great and the tolls are around £30. Fuel is incredibly cheap compared to the UK and in August 2002 our fuel bill for a fully laden estate car with top box was £35 for the entire journey.

If you want to stop and break your journey there are plenty of places to stop off. Have at look at logis de france for basic accommodation along the route.

Take the ferry or the tunnel. We prefer the tunnel as it is only a 35 minute trip end to end.

Flying

Easiest airport is Montepellier at 45 minutes away, car hire from Hertz and Avis is in the airport and is the cheapest. Carcassonne is an hours drive away and is very easy to depart to and from. Nimes is just over the hour and it is easy to navigate your way. Again easy access to hire places. Perpignan is a little further at just under 2 hours drive and Toulouse is just over 2 hours away. Ryan air serves all of these airports. Rather than hire a car, why not take the train.

By Train

Either take the TGV all the way to Beziers or Montpellier and pick up a hire car. Our friends did it in July 2002 and said it was fantastic, smooth and very easy. The motorail is also straightforward but can be expensive in high season.
